With more than 30 years of experience in dressage, Jaap van den Heuij has dedicated his life to training and developing young horses into world-class competitors. His expertise extends beyond the saddle — Jaap is keen to bring out the best in both horse and rider, guiding them to success at the Prix St. George level and beyond. Having coached riders in the Netherlands, Singapore, Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand and China, he has played an instrumental role in shaping champions on the international stage.
Achievements & Career Highlights
Jaap’s career is marked by many successes, from national titles to Olympic-caliber achievements. His ability to recognise and refine talent through training has made him a sought-after coach worldwide. Some of his most notable accomplishments include the following:
- World Cup Final, Las Vegas (2009): Trained Dutch Grand Prix champion KWPN Nartan (Jazz), who later competed at the Olympic level.
- Olympic Games, Hong Kong (2008): Coached Jan Verbeek and his homebred KWPN Horse of the Year, La Cru, to international success.
- Belgian Young Rider Champion (2009): Trained Sanne Kielenstijn, helping her secure a national title.
- Pavo Cup Finals (2003, 2005, 2007): Recognized by the Royal Dutch Sport Horse Studbook (KWPN) for his exceptional work with young dressage horses.
From the first steps of a young horse to the final salute in the Grand Prix arena, Jaap remains deeply committed to the craft, always striving to bring out the best in every horse and rider he works with.

As a Top Coach Level 5 (NOC*NSF), he has helped shape the future of dressage through national training programs, mentorship, and education.
